Wenn Du Englisch beherrschst, wird sich Dir der Sinn des ganzen Liedes ja leicht eröffnen

der sinn des liedes ist sonnenklar, die konkrete bedeutung der bewußten zeile (woher willst du eigentlich "tane" haben?) aber bleibt unklar

fast alle Song-Texte (auch deren Erklärungen) findet man im Internet unter ihrem Titel und der Beifügung "lyrics".

tane could be short for octane, gas. So he could be saying that he pumped gas in New Orleans to get by.

“Pumped a lot of ‘tane,” to someone who doesn’t know the slang, might sound like “popped a lot of chain.” But ’tane, short for “octane,” is a regional dialect term for gasoline (petrol). So in those two lines he is saying that he was a dishwasher in a restaurant = ("cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis..."), and he also had a job as a gas station attendant.
